Historical analysis of the political negotiations between Bashkir nationalists and Bolsheviks during the formation of the Bashkir ASSR (1917-1920), examining ethnic autonomy within early Soviet state-building.
The Bashkir ASSR was the first ethnic autonomous republic in Soviet Russia. My thesis examines how Bashkir nationalists and Bolsheviks negotiated its creation between 1917 and 1920. The compromises they reached became a template for Soviet nationality policy.
